Urangan is well known for the Urangan Pier and the Urangan Harbour, as the gateway to Fraser Island.
The pier was constructed to load sugar onto waiting ships, and has over time been shortened. Today it makes a great place for a walk or to join in with the many keen anglers who love to fish. Each year in September there is a festival called the Pier Festival, and fishing competition.
Construction of modern high rise units has revitalised the area. There are two distinct precints, one adjoing the Pier, and the second at the Harbour.
In between there is a memorial to the Z Force troops who trained on Fraser Island before going to Singapore in World War 2.
The airport is located close-by. Those travelling to Fraser Island stock up with their supplies at the local shopping centre. The whale boats leave from the Urangan Harbour, but the day trips to Fraser Island leave from River Heads about 30 minutes drive.
Many industries supporting tourism and boating needs are located within the suburb. It also has many retirement villages. It is also the home of the Hervey Bay Botanical Gardens where many brides choose to have their wedding photo taken. An orchid house and Oriental garden feature within the grounds.
Peaceful Botanical Gardens opened in 1974
